How to choose an SUV or 4x4 for Andorra
In Andorra a 4x4 is not a fashion statement: of the used cars from 2020 or newer sold in the country, 65% are 4x4s. But before you choose, it is worth separating what really keeps you safe in the snow from what only looks like it does.
4x4 or winter tyres?
The short answer: good winter tyres give more grip than a 4x4 on summer tyres. In the snow, it is the tyres that grip. Even so, many people in Andorra want both, 4x4 and winter tyres, and that makes sense: it is the safest combination. When our customers look for a 4x4 they usually want permanent all-wheel drive; in German listings it appears as quattro (Audi), xDrive (BMW), 4MATIC (Mercedes) or 4Motion (Volkswagen).
Ask about the tyres before the car leaves
In Germany cars are often sold with winter tyres, but not always. Ask for them before the car leaves for Andorra, and also ask how many millimetres of tread the fitted tyres have left. And mind the inspection: the tyres must match the ones allowed by the car's COC (we explain it in the ITV inspection for an imported car).
Diesel, petrol, hybrid or electric
- Diesel or petrol: it depends on how many kilometres you drive a year. Lots, diesel; few, petrol. Over the last year searches for diesel have dropped sharply, from 28% to 16% of searches that filter by fuel.
- Hybrids: they work very well in Andorra.
- Electric: traction is very good. In the cold the range drops noticeably and you need to factor that in, but Andorra is small, so it is not a problem for getting around the country.
Large or small?
A small car is very handy in central Andorra and for parking, but a large SUV fits everywhere too. Choose by how you will use it: family, skiing, towing or town.
Reliability: what we see
The most searched SUVs on our site are the Porsche Macan and the Cupra Formentor. In our experience, the brands that have given us the most reliability problems are Land Rover and Jaguar, and the Fiat group brands, so if you ask us, we usually recommend others.
