Andorra number plates: format, how to reserve yours and what a personalised plate costs
An Andorran number plate has one letter and four digits, issued in sequence: at the end of October 2026 the S series is being issued, past S6600. If you do nothing, your car gets the next free number. But there are two ways to choose: reserve a number in the series that has not come out yet, for €40.74, or apply for a personalised plate with the letters you want, from €300 to €6,000. Here is how each option works, with the rules almost nobody explains and what we see in the registrations we handle every week.
What an Andorran number plate looks like
A standard plate is one letter followed by four digits, for example S6616, one of the latest we have registered. Numbering is sequential: if you do not ask for anything, you get the next number in the series, and when a letter runs out the next one starts. In 2025, 5,452 vehicles were registered in Andorra, 3,798 of them cars, so the series moves quickly.
The physical plates are always made by the Automòbil Club d'Andorra (ACA), which holds the Government concession. A pair of plates with the environmental sticker costs about €45. There are other plate types (diplomatic and consular, MT tourist, trade, historic vehicle, motorbike), but you cannot choose them: they depend on the type of vehicle or owner.
Reserving a plate: choosing your number before it is issued
If you want a specific number in the standard series (your year of birth, a round number, the same as your other car…), you can reserve it before it is issued. It is a Government procedure (form R2T001) and costs €40.74. These are the rules of the reservation regulation:
- In the name of the car's owner. The reservation must be in the name of the future owner. If it is made in someone else's name, you have to withdraw it and reserve again.
- At most 1,500 numbers ahead. You can only reserve a plate that is no more than 1,500 numbers above the one being issued that day.
- Up to three choices. You can list three in the application; once one is granted, the other two are dropped.
- Valid for 90 days. It can be renewed, but only within a set window: between 15 working days and 2 days before it expires.
- You can only use it when the series gets close. The car cannot be registered with the reserved plate until it is less than 100 numbers away from the standard sequence.
In practice, you need to pick the number carefully: reserve one too far ahead and you will have to wait for the series to reach it, renewing the reservation if it takes a while. If you reserve it in your name, we register your imported car with that plate as soon as it arrives.
Personalised plates: what they really are
A personalised plate does not replace the standard one: it is an alias linked to it. The car is first registered with its normal plate and then the personalised one, the one you actually display, is assigned to it. So the order is always: register the car, reserve the combination, then apply for the assignment.
The price depends on the combination:
| Combination | Price |
|---|---|
| 2 letters and 3 digits (e.g. AB123) | €300 |
| 3 letters and 2 digits (e.g. ABC12) | €500 |
| 4 letters and 1 digit (e.g. ABCD1) | €1,000 |
| 5 letters (e.g. LADIS) | €3,000 |
| 2 to 4 characters (e.g. F1 or MAX) | €6,000 |
On top of that come the reservation fee (€40.74) and an annual holding fee of €200 for as long as you keep it. We have handled the €6,000 tier several times; the one our customers ask for most is two letters and three digits, the cheapest.
Combinations that are not accepted
This is where most applications go wrong. Before you fall for a combination, check that it follows these rules:
- Letters only, or letters and digits in that order: letters first, then numbers, never mixed.
- Letters from the Catalan alphabet, in capitals and without accents; digits 0 to 9.
- Between 2 and 5 characters. With 5, at least 2 must be letters.
- It cannot match, or be able to match, the standard numbering (one letter and four digits).
- No "AND" and no references to the Andorran State or public authorities.
- It cannot be just "MT", "CD", "CMD", "A" or "CC" followed by digits, or the word "PROVA".
- No combinations that confuse letters and digits (O and 0, for example), and none already reserved or assigned.
How to get a personalised plate, step by step
- Register the car with its standard plate.
- Apply for the reservation of the combination at the Government's Servei de Tràmits (€40.74). Each person can hold at most three reservations at once, and the law sets a maximum of one month for the decision.
- Apply for the assignment within two months of the decision and pay the price of the combination. After two months without applying, the reservation lapses.
- Collect the plates at the ACA, which hands over the new ones and takes back the standard ones.
If you change or sell your car
A personalised plate is personal and non-transferable: it cannot be sold, given away or assigned to someone else (it can only be inherited). What you can do is move it to another car you own, with a change-of-assignment application to the Government; the car that loses it goes back to its standard plates.
Before selling the car that carries it, you must move it to another vehicle of yours or cancel it. If you have no other car at that moment, you have three months from removing the plates to put it on a new one; in the meantime the personalised plates are handed in to the ACA. Worth knowing if you are importing your next car: plan around those three months.
What about MT tourist plates?
MT plates (tourist registration) are something else: they are temporary and meant for people who live neither in Andorra nor in the European Union. We explain them in detail in our guide to Andorra MT plates.
